Frequency Matching Explained
A different calibration method from the deflection board, aimed at a different question: does every club in your set feel consistent, club to club?
Frequency matching measures how fast a clubshaft oscillates — cycles per minute — when the head end is deflected and released while the grip end stays fixed. It's a different test from deflection-board bending, and it answers a different question: not "how stiff is this shaft in isolation," but "do all the shafts in this set feel consistent relative to each other."
Deflection vs. Frequency: Two Different Questions
Deflection testing tells us how much a single shaft bends under a fixed load — useful for matching an individual shaft to your swing. Frequency testing tells us how a set of shafts compares to each other in oscillation rate — useful for making sure a full iron set feels progressively consistent from long iron to short iron, rather than jumping unevenly between neighboring clubs.
Why Sets Can Drift Even With "Matched" Shafts
Ordering the same shaft model across an entire set doesn't guarantee frequency consistency. Length changes, tip trimming, and small manufacturing variance between individual shaft blanks can all shift the oscillation rate of one club relative to its neighbors, even when every shaft in the box carries the same flex letter.
A frequency check across a finished set sometimes reveals one or two clubs that oscillate noticeably differently than the rest — a mismatch a flex letter alone would never catch.
When We Use Both Together
For a full set build, we typically run deflection testing to pick the right shaft model and flex band for your swing, then run a frequency check across the finished set to confirm club-to-club consistency before it leaves the shop. Neither test alone tells the full story — deflection picks the right shaft, frequency confirms the set was built consistently around it.
