Shaft Spine Alignment: Fact vs. Myth
A build technique with genuine physics behind it and a reputation that's grown well past what the evidence supports.
Every shaft has a spine — a slightly stiffer plane running along its length due to how the material was manufactured. Spine alignment is the practice of finding that plane and orienting it consistently (usually facing the target or facing up) when the head is glued on, on the theory that a randomly oriented spine causes small inconsistencies in how the shaft loads and releases.
What the Physics Actually Supports
The existence of a spine is measurable and real — run a shaft across a spine-finding rig and you'll find a plane that resists bending slightly more than the rest. Where the claims get murkier is in how much that variance actually affects a full-speed golf swing, where far larger forces are in play than the small stiffness differential a spine represents.
Where We Land on It
We check spine orientation as a tiebreaker step, not a headline fitting variable. If two candidate shafts measure identically on the deflection board and feel indistinguishable on demo swings, we'll orient the spine consistently during the build as good practice. We don't market it as the reason a fitting worked, because the deflection and tempo matching almost always account for the bulk of any improvement a golfer notices.
Spine alignment is a reasonable finishing touch during a build. It is not a substitute for actually measuring flex against your swing.
A Word of Caution
Be skeptical of any fitting that leads with spine alignment as the primary selling point while skipping deflection or tempo measurement entirely. The bigger, more consistently measurable factor in how a shaft performs for you is still its bend profile relative to your swing — spine orientation is a secondary refinement on top of that, not a replacement for it.
